The Avella Story

The history of Avella Specialty Pharmacy dates back to 1996 when the company began operations as a single pharmacy in Scottsdale, Ariz. A few years later, clinical pharmacist and company founder John Musil recognized an opportunity to evolve his hands-on, patient- and physician-focused approach into the dynamic and growing arena of specialty pharmaceuticals.

Avella opens its first pharmacy in Scottsdale, Ariz., under former company name: The Apothecary Shops.

John D. Musil, Pharm. D. opens first Avella location in response to community need for expert clinical pharmacy care in a retail setting.

1998

Avella expands to six community-based pharmacies in metropolitan Phoenix.

Just two years in, the demand for services is enough to grow the business in multiple locations. These new pharmacies are developed in strategic locations near clinical practices, making them accessible to patients.

Avella opens its doors at a new location in Tucson, Ariz.

Responding to demand for a local pharmacy offering expert clinical care in fertility, Avella expands to Tucson. This is the first time Avella expands outside of the greater Phoenix area.

Avella expands operations to Las Vegas, Nev.

The demand for expertise in the clinical area of infectious diseases, particularly HIV/AIDS, encourages Avella leadership to expand into Nevada. This is Avella's first venture outside of Arizona.

Avella is the first pharmacy in the nation to achieve the coveted PCAB Accredited Compounding Pharmacy designation.

With a focus in clinical excellence and quality, Avella pharmacies achieve recognition and accreditation as leaders in the practice of compounding patient medication.

Avella opens pharmacy in Columbus, Ohio.

Expanding the physical locations to the eastern geography, the new Ohio location establishes our presence as a national pharmacy.

Avella expands distribution operations to serve more patients nationwide.

Opening a new corporate headquarters and expanding our call center and national distribution facility to over 25,000 square feet allows Avella to keep up with the growing base of patients.

Avella broadens its patient coverage with the addition of a community-based location in St. Louis, Mo., and the acquisition of Greater Sacramento Pharmacy in California.

The acquisition of Greater Sacramento facilitates expanding services for patients and offers Avella additional clinical expertise in the key focus area of oncology.

Avella continues strategic expansion with opening of regional hub pharmacy in Austin, Texas.

With a prime retail location and capacity for distribution, this location serves patients across the state of Texas.

Avella Wholesale receives designation as a Verified-Accredited Wholesale Distributor (VAWD).

Avella's wholesale division achieves this prestigious accreditation that validates the close attention to detail in all of our processes.

Avella acquires Colorado Pharmacy in Denver and opens first East Coast retail pharmacy in Orlando, Fla.

Primarily focused on infectious diseases (including HIV medications), Colorado Pharmacy offers new and existing customers expanded clinical services under the Avella brand.

Avella opens the first location on the East Coast with retail pharmacy in Florida to complement existing national distribution capabilities.

Avella recognized as one of the fastest growing companies in the nation.

Inc. Magazine ranks Avella as one of the fastest growing companies in the nation for the sixth straight year with a 3-year growth of 298 percent. Arizona Corporate Excellence (ACE) Awards recognizes Avella as the fastest growing privately held company based in Arizona. This sustained growth allows Avella to offer expanded clinical services to customers.
